The Institute of Applied and Mathematical Linguistics
Director
Professor Rodmonga Kondrat'evna Potapova, Ph.D., Academician of the International Informatization Academy.
Institute of Applied and Mathematical Linguistics was established in May of 2009 by resolution of the MSLU Academic Council.

The Institute comprises the Chair of Applied and Experimental Linguistics and the Chair of Linguistic Semantics, the Research and Education Centre for Fundamental and Applied Speechology, the Research and Education Centre “Linguistic Determinants of Information Security Technologies, the Experimental Phonetics Laboratory for Forensic Speechology.

The demand for specialists in theoretical and applied linguistics is constantly increasing. The expansion of international contacts, development of interlingual and intercultural links, a sharp surge in the development of computers and new information technologies, the ever-increasing use of the Internet in Russia do not eliminate the traditional problems of applied linguistics. Moreover, they deepen and expand them. The main purpose of education is to obtain the competence needed to provide conscious, proactive and competent participation of graduates in solving various applied problems which require knowledge of the structure and mechanisms of speech and text activity; among them in the first place stands the problem of automated processing of spoken and written language. One should note the practical orientation of education allowing the graduates to use their knowledge for solving practical problems. An important aspect of this practical orientation is the extensive training in the field of advanced information technologies and programming performed at the Institute of Applied and Mathematical Linguistics. Students of the Institute participate in research activities involving the development of automated training systems, databases, computer dictionaries, etc.

Areas of professional activity: linguistic education, cross-language communication; linguistics and new information technologies; research and design activities in the field of applied, mathematical and experimental linguistics in institutions and organizations developing innovative information and communication technologies; teaching both theoretical and practical aspects of applied linguistics.

Objects of professional activity: linguistic theory as a system of signs and a communication system; studying and modeling of natural and artificial languages as a cognitive base and as a tool for displaying and organizing objects of human thinking and culture; linguistic components of electronic information systems; foreign languages and cross-language communication; theoretical and applied linguistics.

The following activities are provided in the course of training.
♦ Production and practical activities: innovative and practical activities in the field of applied, mathematical and experimental linguistics in institutions and organizations developing innovative information and communication technologies; teaching theoretical and practical aspects of applied linguistics.

♦ Scientific and academic activities: participation in the processes of creation of electronic linguistic resources (text corpora, electronic dictionaries, phonetic databases, etc.); development of linguistic products; development of language learning materials and applications; organization of activities involving studying various aspects of linguistic determinants of information security technologies, fundamental and applied speechology.

♦ Research activities: reviewing and analysis of scientific literature in the field of applied, mathematical and experimental linguistics for professional purposes; participation in the planning and conducting scientific experiments and in the processing of the results obtained; implementation of priority innovative research projects in applied, mathematical and experimental linguistics; development of special techniques and solutions for person identification by voice and speech; conducting research using the state-of-the-art hardware and software for different aspects of information security in the context of polyfunctional nature of spoken and written language.

♦ Organization and management activities: organization and management of processes of software and linguistic content development for automatic multifunctional systems.
