The professorial staff includes 19 professors among them 10 Ph.Ds, 11 associate professors.
The professors of the department teach English grammar to all students of daytime and evening departments of the Faculty of the Humanities and Applied Sciences ('Theory and Methodology of teaching foreign languages and cultures', 'Psychology ', ' Theoretical and applied linguistics') and to students of Intercultural Communication Faculty. Also the professors deliver lectures on 'Theoretical Grammar of the English Language', 'History of the English Language and Introduction to Special Philology' to students and 'Introduction to Germanistics. The Gothic Language' and 'History of the English Language' to postgraduates. The faculty supervise course and graduation papers within the framework of scientific work of the department.
The department carries out significant scientific and methodological work. The global agenda of scientific research of the department,'Cognitive-communicative and discursive-pragmatic aspects of grammatical units belonging to different levels in synchrony and diachrony', is presented by a number of scientific approaches, being developed by leading scholars of the department:
Cognitive-functional approach to grammatical description and cognitively oriented linguistic modeling (professor T.S. Sorokina).
Historical and sociolinguistic variation of functional norm of the English language (I.V. Reznik).
genre-style and discourse-pragmatic characteristics of means expressing conceptual relations and peculiarities of informational text structure (N.P. Brileva, M.A. Sal'kova).
The stated above directions continue and develop scientific translations of the department. They were established by prominent Russian scholars such as L.S. Barkhudarov and T.A. Rastorgueva. Many generations of linguists, specialists in the grammatical and historical fields, studied within the department's scientific school.
Eminent specialists of the department supervise scientific works of postgraduates from MSLU and other universities of Russian Federation.
The department hosts student scientific societies – 'Gender research: prospects of development' (head of the society T.I. Gribanova) and 'Historical etymology of some areas of English vocabulary' (head of the society I. V. Reznik).
The principle directions of methodological work of the department are creation of educational complexes in pragmatical grammar and history of the English language, implementing communicative-functional approach of contemporary methodology, and also materials for tests in practical and theoretical disciplines of the department.
Among the achievements of the department of recent years in the area of methodology of teaching foreign languages are an educational complex 'Practical grammar of English language' (R.V. Reznik, T.S. Sorokina, T.A. Kazaritskaya. M. Flinta., Science, 1996-2002), that got a governmental award in 2002 in the sphere of education, and an educational complex (theory and practice) 'History of English language' (R.V. Reznik, T.S. Sorokina, I.V. Reznik . M. Flinta., Science, 2001)
