Professor Boris Ur'evich Gorodetsky, Ph.D., a prominent scholar of fundamental and applied semantics, linguistic typology and lexicography, an author of more than 150 scientific works.
The department takes part in teaching a number of fundamental and applied subjects, connected with issues of morphological, syntactic and semantic text analysis, of linguistic typology, semantics, modeling understanding and construction of texts, computer lexicography and creating terminological data banks, systems of automated translation and search engines, cognitive linguistics, political communication, speech influence, history of linguistics to students, mainly in the framework of the profession •031301'Theoretical and applied linguistics' .
The faculty of the department supervise graduation papers and theses. The professors of the department teach theoretical and applied linguistics at college under MSLU.
The department takes part in teaching students of the following specialty 031401 'Culturology' (teaching semiotics and linguistics) and specialties 040201'Sociology' (teaching of theory of mass communication). The faculty delivers specialized lectures on acute problems of semantics, linguistic theory, applied linguistics to postgraduates of MSLU.
The members of the department published such educational textbooks as 'Linguistic conception of terminological data bank', 'Linguistic tasks', 'Computer and dictionary', 'English-Russian dictionary of linguistics and semiotics in 2 volumes, 'Verbal influence on advertising', 'Problems of applied linguistics', 'Linguistic grounds for RAF (Pedagogical grammar of Russian language)', 'Algorithms of influence' and others.
Wide known and republished in different variants educational manuals, created under supervision of Gorodetsky B.U. before the foundation of the department ('New in foreign linguistics', releases XII, XIV, XVII, XXIV), are used in teaching.
Linguistic typology and linguistic areas are one of priority directions of the department's scientific activity. The department hosts a scientific laboratory of typological research, that develops a data base 'The Languages of the World' and a computer search engine based on it (specialists of The Institute of Linguistics RAS and ones of the department of applied and experimental linguistics take part in this work). Expeditions studying languages of less-numerous people of Russia, are carried out within the framework of this approach.
Another important scientific direction of the department is computer lexicography. The faculty and graduates of the department are creators of prominent multilingual electronic dictionaries, such as 'Lingvo', 'Multilex'.
An interesting research direction of the department is studying of strategies of communicative influence of politic, advertising and PR-texts. More than 90 graduation papers, connected with scientific research of professors and associate professors, have been defended at the department.
Since its foundation the department has presented a number of Ph.D. theses within specialties 10.02.19 'Linguistic Theory', 10.02.20 'Historical , comparative and typological linguistics', 10.02.21 'Applied and mathematic linguistics'.
Nowadays leading specialists of the department supervise scientific works of postgraduates and doctorates within the three mentioned specialties.
The department hosts a student scientific society ' Problems of applied semantics and language typology (head of the society Gorodetsky B.U.).
