Professor Irina Kraeva, Ph.D. in Linguistics
The Faculty of the Humanities and Applied Sciences is an indispensable part of the Moscow State Linguistic University and the Institute of Foreign Languages named after Maurice Thorez. It was established in 1930 under the name of the Department of the English Language; in 1990 it served as the basis for the Faculty of the Humanities and Applied Sciences. Under the new name the faculty continued the traditions of its predecessor.
At present the Faculty of Humanities and Applied Sciences offers the following qualifications to its students:
• 031201 – Theory and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures (majors in Linguistics and Teaching; the first foreign language is English); full-time (daytime) and part-time (evening) programs are available;
• 031301 – Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (major in Linguistics); full-time (daytime) program is available;
• 030301 – Psychology (major in Psychology, Teacher of Psychology); full-time (daytime) program is available;
• 050706 – Pedagogics and Psychology (major in Teacher-psychologist); full-time (daytime) program is available;
• 031100 – Linguistics, baccalaureate degree.
In the 1990s the Faculty of Humanities and Applied Sciences offered its students and opportunity to receive degrees and diplomas in new fields of study. The departments of economics, law, political studies, international relations – currently parts of other faculties and institutes within the University – started their life as part of the Faculty. In 2010 the Institute of Applied and Mathematical Linguistics was opened as a separate division within the Faculty.
In the history of the Faculty there have been many researchers who have made undoubtedly valuable contribution to the development of the linguistic research both in the USSR / Russia and in the world. Professors I.R. Galperin, L.S. Barkhudarov, A.V. Kunin, A.I. Smirnitsky, A.S. Akhmanova, G. P. Torsuev, V.A. Vasiliev, A.L. Trakhterev, T.A. Rastorgueva taught at the faculty. 'Big English-Russian Dictionary' and 'Stylistics of the English Language' by I.R Galperin, 'English-Russian Phraseological Dictionary' by A.V. Kunin, 'English Phonetics' by V.A. Vasiliev, 'History of the English Language' by T.A. Rastorgueva and others have been handbooks for many generations of students, post-graduates and English language enthusiasts. The faculty served as the base for world-famous linguistic schools, such as the Phonological School of professor G.P. Torsuev, the School of Grammar of professor L.S. Barkhudarov, the School of Phraseology of professor A.V. Kunin, the School of Stylistics of professor I.R. Galperin. Their theoretical heritage continues to receive further development on a completely new level of philological thought as part of the research performed at the Faculty.
Faculty of the Humanities and Applied Sciences is one of the biggest educational departments of the university. The faculty numbers over 150 teachers, including 14 Higher Doctorate degree holders, 65 Ph. D. holders, 20 professors and 69 associate professors.
The postgraduate and doctorate students of the Faculty form the source of scientific and teaching staff for the Russian Federation and the CIS countries. The leading researchers of the Faculty supervise the scientific research of the postgraduate students who are working towards their Ph.D. degree in the fields of research offered by the Faculty. These postgraduate students represent linguistic educational establishments from various cities and towns of the Russian Federation (Moscow, Irkutsk, Belgorod, Ryazan, Kaluga, Ulianovsk, Samara, Krasnoyarsk, Shadrinsk, Ussuriysk, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and others).
Faculty graduates – teachers of foreign languages and cultures – join the core of the teaching staff of the Moscow State Linguistic Universities. There is not a single department within the University which would not employ one of the Faculty graduates!
Faculty of the Humanities and Applied Sciences maintains wide partner connections with colleges and universities in Russia, in the CIS countries, in member states of the Shanghai Organization. Among them: The Institute of Linguistics RAS, Minsk State Linguistic University (Belarus), University of Granada (Spain), The Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg (Germany), University of Patras (Greece), Bauman Moscow State Technical University (BMSTU, Bauman MSTU), etc.
In early 2003 there was set up the Association of English researchers and teachers of English (AESTE), chaired by Professor N.D. Tokareva, which unites about 30 universities within Russia, the CIS countries and other countries.
The scholars of the faculty are actively involved in a number of the Council of Europe projects: “The European Language Portfolio”, “New technologies in foreign language teaching”, “Cultural mediation in foreign language teaching”.
Students of the Faculty take active part in its life. As members of the Students’ Scientific society they annually take part in the University days of student research. Since 2000 the Faculty has been a home of the Students’ English theatre. Students work at the Center for the English language and culture, publish their newspaper, take part in sports competitions, participate in the international model of Russia – NATO council, in the international activities of the European Youth parliament and in many other events held as part of the innovative projects within the University.
