The Department of Theory and History of International Relations

   The Department of Theory and History of International Relations was created in 1991 to train students of specialization 030701 – International Relations with the qualification «an expert in the sphere of international relations» (with the command of two foreign languages).
The curriculum is elaborated for 5 years (full-time tuition) and encompasses 3 main blocs: humanitarian-linguistic studies, political sciences and studies of international politics. From the year 2011 there will be a shift to the two-level system of education (Bachelor-Master). The Department provides lecture courses of such disciplines as the history of international relations and foreign policy of Russia, the basis of international relations theory, the modern foreign policy of international relations, negotiating, the basis of geopolitics and others.

   The curriculum, made up according to the State Education Standards, is based on the experience of the Russian and leading foreign universities. Among the faculty of the Department there are prominent political scientists and experts of international relations as well as unique teachers – linguists of MSLU. The students of international relations undergo their training in foreign educational centers and practice their skills in state bodies of the Russian Federation, research, educational and nongovernmental organizations.

   The graduates, who acquired the qualification at the Department of International Relations:
- have a high level of professional training in the sphere of international political sciences and law, are good at the realms of foreign and home policy, law, history and culture of the countries of their specialization, speak two-three foreign languages at the professional level;
- enjoy profound knowledge of subjects in the framework of political sciences and international policy, are able to develop a range of probable political choices and to fulfill a proper choice adjusting it to the political climate of the countries of their specialization;
- have technical and functional skills in the sphere of politics, theoretical research in international relations and political sciences, translation of political texts;
-are good at communicating, team-working and competing.
The graduates have opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of spheres:
- in the legislative bodies of the Russian Federation, governmental institutions, administration offices of subjects of the Russian Federation and other institutions and organizations;
- in nongovernmental structures (political parties and social movements, the media, scientific, educational and analytical centers, commercial and other organizations).
- in international organizations (the UN, UNESCO, OSCE, CIS, EurAsEC and SCO and others.).

   The graduates have also opportunities to continue postgraduate education in the following specializations:
07.00.15 – History of international relations and world politics;
23.00.04 – Political problems of international relations and global and regional development.

   The faculty of the Department consists of the leading experts in international relations and famous negotiators: Professors and PhDs A.A. Sagomonyan, (Head of Department), I.S. Kremer, V.V. Roginsky (a member of Higher Attestation Commission), A.M. Khazanov, L.G. Ivashov (the President of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation Ya.A. Burlyay (the current Ambassador in Ecuador), Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation A.I. Kuznetsov (the current Ambassador in Spain), Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary A.I. Vavilov, Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary V.I. Shvedov, A.G. Spitsin and others. The Department of Theory and History of International Relations is closely linked with the University named after A. Matskevich in Poznan (Poland), the University of North Iowa (the USA), the University of Western Ontario (Canada), the University of Granada, The University of Cádiz, the University of Las-Palmas (Spain), The University named after J. Gutenberg (Mainz, Germany), Beijing Normal University (China), the University of Taipei (Taiwan), the University of Tenri (Japan). The universities exchange students groups and organize joint workshops. Students are engaged in research work.

   The graduates of the Department (there have been 15 graduations so far – about 500 graduates) work in the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the State Duma and the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, other authority structures, scientific and educational institutions, different international foundations, the media, PR- agencies and secret services.
