The Department of World Culture
The Department of World Culture was set up in 1990 to provide tuition in courses related to cultural studies and history to students of all the faculties of the MSLU.
The Department is now focused entirely on graduating cultural studies specialists (specialization 031401) of the Institute of International Relations and Social and Political Sciences of the MSLU.
The first intake of students by the Department dates back to the August of 1997. The graduates are qualified cultural studies specialists. The period of study is 5 years (full-time tuition).
The graduates can speak two or more languages (Western languages as well as Oriental) which makes them highly employable in various spheres.
The Department is responsible for 18 courses connected with the theory and history of culture which are taught by highly qualified and experienced specialists including professors V.M.Solovyov, Ph.D., V.V.Vorobyov, Ph.D., V.A.Los Ph.D., O.S.Suvorova, Ph.D.
The courses taught embrace the theory of culture, the methodology of culture, the philosophy of culture, the sociology of culture, the history of world culture, the history of religion, the theory and history of world art, the theory and history of Russian art, the cultural history of Russia, cultural anthropology, everyday culture, applied culturology, semiotics, history of science, philosophy, the Russian language and the culture of speech, rhetoric, mathematics, logic and information technology.
Alongside theoretical courses great emphasis is laid on the acquisition of practical skills. Undergraduates are to do four internships beginning from the second year of studies in research institutes, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the media, in industry and in private companies (the first internship being connected with the work of local museums, followed by ethnology-oriented, specialty- and thesis-related internships). Students who display outstanding knowledge of foreign languages and world culture are given opportunity to spend months of study placement in foreign educational institutions.
Graduates of the Chair have vast career opportunities in the following institutions and spheres:
♦ various governmental organs and institutions responsible for defining the cultural policy of the country and organizing cultural events;
♦ governmental organs of federal, regional and municipal level (posts requiring the knowledge of ethnical, religious and political culture as well as theoretical and practical knowledge of intercultural communication);
♦ libraries and museums;
♦ higher educational institutions (both teaching and administrative positions);
♦ the mass media, Public Relations.
