The department of linguistics and professional communication in the sphere of political science was created in 1997 for specialists and bachelors who take their major in international relations and political science. Since June 2004, the department became a part of the Institute of International Relations and Socio-political Sciences
The department teaches 8 foreign languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Uzbek, Finnish). Practical course of the first and the second foreign language (1 – 10 semester) and a course of vocational-oriented translation (6 – 9 semester) are being taught at the department.
The department has been working out a new (for the Moscow State Linguistic University) direction in the sphere of foreign languages training, notably vocational-oriented teaching of foreign languages for specialists with major in non-linguistics. Education is carried out on an enhanced model. The main theoretical propositions on the problems of professional discourse were published in six issues of “Herald of Moscow State Linguistic University”, prepared by the Department, as well as in the data of inter-university conference: “Foreign languages in the sphere of professional communication” organized by the Department.
New up-to-date teaching materials are regularly elaborated at the Department. Professors of the Department has written numerous tutorials, such as : “State system in Britain and the USA”; “Metaphor in the sphere of economy and politics”; “The UN in the 21st century”; “Glossary for specialists in political science”; “German in politics” (struggle with terrorism); “German in politics” (International organizations); “ABC of politics in French”; “Political parties of France”; “Analysis and translation of socio-political texts”; “Practical course of grammar for specialists in international relations and political scientists” ; “Political leadership and diplomacy”; “Contemporary Spain”; “Diplomacy in the system of international relations” (practical course of professional communication) and many others.
