The Correspondence Faculty was founded in 1930. More then 20 thousand highly qualified teachers of foreign language have graduated from it since then. In 1994 the Faculty started training translators and interpreters.
The Facultygraduates work both in public and private sectors as interpreters and translators, university lecturers and school teachers, managers, mass media workers and so on.
Currently the Faculty offers the following educational programmes:
♦ Theory and Methodology of Foreign Language and Culture Teaching (the target language is English)
♦ Theory and Practice of Translation and Interpretation (the target languages are English, German, and French)
The students major in one foreign language. The education is either state-financed or tuition fee charged.
The Faculty teaching staff is experienced, professional, and highly qualified. Dean of the Faculty and Head of Chair of the French and German Languages is Danilova N.N., PhD, Head of Chair of the English Language is Bogdanova I.M., PhD. The Faculty boasts such lecturers as Holina I.M., PhD, Avdonina M.Y., PhD, Tadevosyan T.V., AP, and many others among its teaching staff.
Most of the Faculty professors are MSLU graduates.
The Facultyoffers two forms of education: distance and part- time, i.e. advance plus language course.
Distance learning has three components as its basis. They are:
1) students’ individual oral and written activity,
2) stage- by- stage control of their academic progress,
3) full- time classes during winter and summer session time followed by
examinations.
Students opting for the advance plus language course have classes on a regular
basis in the evening. The program offers more academic hours than the distance one, which makes the former similar to the evening (part- time) form of studies. All this allows to implement a wider range of methods aiming at forming and developing language skills of students as well as contributes to a thorough study of the language. The course enables students to get additional tutorials which in its turn improves the students’ command of the language.
Quite a number of textbooks and manuals, compiled by the teaching staff of the Faculty are used in the educational process. Most of them are published by «Vysshaya Shkola» publishing house and approved by the Russian Ministry of Education. There are also a large number of computer based teaching programs worked out at the Faculty. Besides the lecturers can consult the students via the Internet.
The course of study lasts five years. On its completion the graduates get a certified degree in either Foreign Language Teaching and Linguistics or Interpreting/Translating and Linguistics.
The Faculty may offer qualified applicants taking a second degree in either of the above mentioned educational programmes.
The second degree course takes three and a half years or more. The curricula
are individually- oriented.
