Dean of the Faculty
Innara Guseynova, Ph.D. in Linguistics 

 
   The Faculty of Translation and Interpretation was established at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages in February 1942. About five thousand professional translators and interpreters majoring in two or more foreign languages have graduated from it in over 65 years.

   The first Dean of the Faculty was Professor Ilya Romanovich Galperin, a world- renowned linguist. 

   The Faculty includes 13 departments:
English Language Department - head of the department is Tatyana Andreevna Shchors, Candidate of Philology (PhD), Associate Professor.
German Language Department - head of the department is Elena Stanislavovna Baturina, Candidate of Philology (PhD).
French Language Department - head of the department is Bournatseva Zinaida Constantinovna, Candidate in Philology, Professor of MSLU.
Spanish Language Department - head of the department is Nelya Nilovna Kurchatkina, Candidate of Philology (PhD), Professor of MSLU.
Italian Language Departmen - head of the department is Dmitriy Vasilievich Ryabtsev, Associate Professor.
Portuguese Language Department – head of the department is Candidate of Philology (PhD) Kseniya Kirillovna Nechaeva.
Scandinavian Languages, Dutch and Finnish Languages Department - head of the department is Tatyana Nikolaevna Drenyasova Doctor of Philology, Professor.
Oriental Languages Department - head of the department is Lola Shakenovna Rakhimbekova, Candidate of Philology (PhD), Associate Professor.
English as a Second Foreign Language Department - head of the department is Irina Mikhailovna Shokina, Candidate of Philology (PhD), assistant professor.
English Translation Department - head of the department is Dmitry Mikhailovitch Buzadzhi, Candidate of Philology (PhD).
German Translation Department - head of the department – Sergey Vasilievich Serzhantov, Candidate of Philology(PhD), Associate Professor.
French Translation Department - head of the department is Burlyai Svetlana Anastasyevna, Candidate in Philology(PhD), Professor of MSLU.
Spanish Translation Department - head of the department is Natalya Nikolaevna Nichiporenko, Associate Professor.

   The students of the Faculty are trained in Translation/Interpretation and Translation Studies and qualify as Linguists and Translators/Interpreters in two foreign languages.
Students major in two of the 19 European and Oriental languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Azerbaijani and Moldavien.

   The Faculty of Translation and Interpretation consists of more than 200 members of teaching staff, 70 of whom have the highest academic degrees, including 8 Doctors of Science and 62 Candidates of Science. A number of famous linguists and translators teaches at the Faculty, including – Academician, professor I.I.Khaleeva (Doctor of Philology), professor T.N.Drenyasova (Doctor of Philology), professor; I. Yermolovich (Doctor of Philology), professor D. V. Psurtsev (Doctor of Philology), professor M. D. Litvinova, professor Melikov T.D. (Doctor of Philology), professor Dj.H. Dorry (Doctor of Philology), professor K.N. Khitrik (Doctor of Philology), professor M.Ya.Zwilling (Candidate of Philology (PhD), professor V. K. Lanchikov (Candidate of Philology), professor M. V. Litvinova, professor S.A. Bourlyay (Candidate of Philology (PhD), professor N.N. Kurchatkina (Candidate of Philology (PhD), professor V.G. Lebedev (Candidate of Philology (PhD), assistant professor A. G. Vitrenko (Candidate of History), assistant professor R. R. Nikolayevskaya (Candidate of Philology), assistant professor A. P. Chuzhakin, and others.
The graduates of the Faculty may choose to take a postgraduate course to continue their studies. Junior and senior students can develop their research skills in the Student Academic Society of the Faculty. They also participate in regional, all-Russia and international conferences and student academic forums.

   Students of the Faculty take part in a student conference held annually at the University for academic and practical purposes as a part of the Day of Science.
Students of the Faculty undertake work placements in state institutions, large companies and organizations in accordance with the university syllabuses. Students with better grades can take study placements in the countries where the languages they major in are spoken.

   Within the programs of cooperation with foreign universities senior students can take short-term (3 months or more) study courses in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, France, Sweden, Finland, China, Korea, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey and other countries of the world.

   The Faculty includes the Centres for Language and Culture and they are:
Centre for Netherland Language and Culture and Centre for Italian Language and Culture and Center for Canadian Studies (Languages, Cultures and Education of Canada) and Centre for Turkish Language and Culture and Centre for Persian Language and Iranian Culture.

   The Centres set out to encourage the implementation of high academic, pedagogical and practical standards in teaching and studying language, literature, history and culture.
Students majoring in languages have access to the libraries of the Centres; they can also work on their course and graduation papers and are encouraged to seek academic consultation in doing their research. The Centres hold discussions of research papers and translations of languages fiction.

   The Centres are equipped with modern technology including computers, copy machines, radio and TV facilities. 
   The Centres are planning to organize research and practical workshops as well as meetings with russian and foreign linguists, writers, politicians and public officials.
The duration of the programs at the Faculty is five years, full-time only. Upon the completion of the programs graduates are awarded a diploma of the Ministry for education and science and a qualification of Linguist/Translator. Graduates of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation are employed in various government offices of the Russian Federation and in the President’s Administration; hold high posts in the Russian government and Parliament. They work in the MFA, ITAR-TASS information agency, RIA – Novosti information agency, in foreign representatives of Russia. Some of the graduates are leading employees of Russian mass media, others provide interpretation services to the leaders of the Russian Federation during the top-level visits and talks with their foreign counterparts.
