Head of the Department The Department of english as a second foreign language is responsible for teaching English as a second foreign language to students taking a degree in “Translation/Interpretation and Translation Studies”. English is taught both at the beginners’ and advanced levels in all the five years of study. The syllabuses structured in accordance with the MSLU curriculum include “A Practical Course of English as a Second Foreign Language”; “A Practical Course in Verbal Communication Culture (English)”; “Theoretical Foundations of English”.
The Department staff have developed extracurricular professionally-oriented courses ”English for Specific Purposes” and “A Practical Course in Verbal Communication Culture (English)” which are part of such degree programs as “Culture Studies”, “Public Relations”, “Regional Studies” and “Journalism” /now offered by the Institute of International Relations and Socio-Political Studies at MSLU /.
Since students are taught various aspects of modern English language usage, staff members of the Department have always been engaged in the work of creating textbooks, guides and testing materials to facilitate acquisition of English as a second foreign language. A great deal of work has always been done to incorporate state-of-the-art facilities in the process of teaching and to update teaching methods and materials for study /including audio-visual materials/, designed for students doing both linguistic and non-linguistic degrees.
Since 2008 the Department has been headed by Candidate of Philology (PhD), assistant professor Irina Mikhailovna Shokina, a graduate of the Faculty of Human and Applied Studies at Moscow State Linguistic University (MSLU).
