The Department of English Language of MSLU's Translation and Interpretation Faculty offers theoretical and practical courses to students who pursue their degree in Translation and Interpretation (qualification/ "Linguist-translator/interpreter"), English as a Second Language.
The Department provides students with a solid foundation in linguistics by offering a full range of theoretical courses - Theory of English Phonetics, Introduction to Specialized Philology and History of English, Theory of English Grammar, English Lexicology and English Stylistics - and by teaching all aspects of oral and written communication - A Practical Course of English (years 1 - 2) and A Practical Course in Verbal Communication Culture (years 3 -5).
The Department has an academic staff of twenty: seven instructors have the academic degree of Candidate of Science (Philology), one – the academic degree of Candidate of Science (Philosophy) and four of them have the academic rank of Associate Professor and three others have the rank of associate Professor.
Research interests and activities of the Department members focus on current issues and challenges of linguistics and theory of translation. The Department offers academic supervision in post-graduate studies. Instructors of the Department do part-time postgraduate studies.
Teaching and instruction support interests and activities of the Department members include development of syllabi for different subjects within the practical course of oral and written communication and the practical course in culture and communication as well as syllabi for theoretical courses, development of study aids and instruction support resources, creation and construction of tests.
The current head of the department is Tatiana Andreevna Shchors (appointed in 1992), graduate of Moscow State University (the Roman-German Department of the Philological Faculty).
