The English Translation Department teaches theoretical and practical courses to 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-year students of the Translation and Interpreting Faculty. The practical courses include Translation from English into Russian, Translation from Russian into English and English-Russian Interpreting. Department staff also provide instruction at the Faculty for Foreign Students and develop and teach Teachers’ Refresher Courses. Optional courses of simultaneous interpretation are also provided by department members for students with a sufficient degree of aptitude.
The department is staffed by top-quality specialists with ample experience in teaching, the development of teaching materials, and professional translation and interpreting. The department currently employs 33 teachers, including 2 Doctors of Philology (advanced doctor’s degree), 12 Candidates of Philology (PhD), 6 professors and 10 associate professors. Among them are a number of translators/interpreters and linguists well-known both in and outside of Russia, such as professor. D. I. Yermolovich (Doctor of Philology), professor D. V. Psurtsev (Doctor of Philology), professor V. K. Lanchikov (Candidate of Philology), professor M. D. Litvinova, associate professor V. M. Ilyukhin (Candidate of Philology), associate professor A. V. Nesterov (Candidate of Philology), associate professor A. G. Vitrenko (Candidate of History), associate professor R. R. Nikolayevskaya (Candidate of Philology), associate professor A. P. Chuzhakin, associate professor O. V. Novitskaya, and others.
Department members supervise post-graduate research in translation studies. Graduation papers and final undergraduate translations (course-works) done under the supervision of department teachers focus on the major issues of literary, scientific, social and political translation.
Department staff actively participate in academic conferences (both as speakers and organisers), contribute to translation-related issues of the MSLU Journal, which is published under the auspices of the Russian Supreme Academic Commission, to the translation journals Stolpotvorenie and Mosty, as well as other publications. The department has been an active participant in the innovative educational programme Lingvapark, which is aimed at establishing a basis for a nation-wide system of translator/interpreter training.
The university administration also relies on the department’s professionals to translate important documents and interpret during negotiations at the international level.
Since 2008, the English Translation Department has been headed by Dmitry M. Buzadzhi, Candidate of Philology, a graduate of the university’s Translation and Interpreting Faculty.
