Uruguay: A New Area of Cooperation
03.03.2023
On March 1, MSLU rector Irina Kraeva, Head of the Department of International Cooperation and Internationalization Irina Shokina and Deputy Director of the Institute of Information Sciences Alexandra Vanichkina visited the Embassy of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay in the Russian Federation at the invitation of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Daniel Castillo Gomez. Consul Florencia Del Co participated in the meeting.
Mr. Gomez took part in the International Scientific Seminar New Forms of Cooperation between Russia and Latin America, which was held at MSLU on February 10. On the same day, he invited MSLU rector to visit the representative office of Uruguay in Moscow, as he was extremely interested in the unique advantage of the university - the opportunity to study in the Information Security educational program at a leading linguistic university, where students are proficient in two foreign languages.
At the meeting, Mr Gomez and Ms Del Co were pleased to learn that Spanish is one of the most popular language among our students, and over 1000 people are studying it. The hosts were also interested to hear that Russian as a foreign language has been taught at MSLU for over 60 years both as a main educational program and in courses, preparatory department, Summer and Winter schools.
Mr. Gomez, in turn, said that education in Uruguay is an indisputable priority of state policy, and since 2009 the country has been implementing a program “one laptop per child” aimed at increasing the digital literacy of the population. In terms of the quality of education, the country ranks 59th in the world. The country's leading university, the Republican University of Uruguay, has an interpreting training school, and Mr Ambassador intends to take the initiative to include Russian in the list of languages studied. Mr Gomez was also interested in the experience of MSLU cooperation with the University of Information Sciences, Jose Antonio Echevarria Technical University of Havana, and the University of Matanzas of Cuba, and he expressed his intention to initiate cooperation between MSLU and the universities of Uruguay in the field of information sciences, translation and interpreting studies, theory and methods of teaching Spanish as a foreign language, foreign regional studies, international law and others directions.
Another proof of the quality of education at MSLU, highly appreciated by Mr Ambassador, was the consecutive interpretation carried out by a graduate of the MSLU and the Training Programme for Candidates for the Competitive Language Examinations, now a teacher at the Department of Spanish Maxim Zubov.
