Portuguese Language Day at MSLU

On June 2, MSLU hosted a solemn meeting to celebrate World Portuguese Language Day as part of a series of events marking the 60th anniversary of the Portuguese Department at MSLU’s Faculty of Interpreting and Translation.

The event was attended by guests of honor: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federative Republic of Brazil Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola Augusto da Silva Cunha, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea Luciano Nkogo Ndong Ayekaba, as well as other embassy representatives, staff members of the Ibero-American Cultural Center at the Rudomino Library of Foreign Literature, Lomonosov Moscow State University faculty members and students, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s MGIMO and the Diplomatic Academy, and other universities.

Welcoming speeches were made by Innara Guseynova, Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Educational Work, and Ekaterina Pokholkova, Dean of the Interpreting and Translation Faculty who emphasized the important role the Portuguese language plays in the context of modern economic and political processes. She also spoke about the launch of new educational and cultural programs and the unprecedented increase of interest in the study of Portuguese in the Russian Federation.

The students of the Portuguese language department at MSLU’s Faculty of Interpreting and Translation prepared a wonderful concert with various instrumental, vocal and dance numbers, as well as stage performances and poem recitals. No spectator was left untouched by the concert participants’ amazing performance. The event was organized by English language Faculty students who do Portuguese as a second foreign language, as well as by Angolan and Brazilian students studying at MSLU, and students of the Psychology Department at the Lomonosov Moscow State University who also do Portuguese as a second foreign language.
