Would you like to take on the challenge of combining journalism with studying at least two foreign languages? If so, then our university has an attractive option for you.

Program Overview

Our 4-year Bachelor Program in Journalism provides students with in-depth academic knowledge in the field. It offers a solid grounding in the skills that are critical to success in the global journalism of today. The programme will introduce you to different theories and varieties of international journalism and will center around authoritative materials and relevant case studies to consider the political, economic, cultural and social implications of journalistic practice. You will try your hand at all platforms of journalism (print, broadcast and online), exploring theory as well as reflecting on your practice. Uniquely, this programme allows you to combine journalistic skills with studying at least two foreign languages, one of them English.

At the end of your studies you will have an oral final examination in International Communication and International Information Flow. You will also give a viva presentation of your graduation research paper (Bachelor’s Thesis).

Course structure

Year 1

In your first year, you will be introduced to core concepts in journalism and to the basic skills and techniques involved in writing articles and news reporting (in Russian). You will study momentous events in the history of international journalism and explore the broader context of journalism and critical issues facing journalists today. In addition, you will develop your competence in your FL1, laying the foundation of FL2 (from the second semester).

Year 2

In your second year, you will explore Psychology in Journalism and develop awareness of Global News Analysis. These subjects will be combined with intensive training in two foreign languages and mastering a wide range of practical and editorial skills.

Year 3

In your third year, you will enhance your Television Journalist skills and have Television Journalism on the curriculum. Your other topics of study will include journalistic ethics, the regulation of journalism, the privacy issue. You will continue to refine your skills both in FL 1 and FL2 by researching materials and presenting information in them. The Faculty of Journalism has links with several European and Asian universities, so you may have the chance to study abroad for a few months.

Year 4

In the fourth year, you will take on Newspaper Journalism along with some other subjects. A Radio Journalism Course is a valuable addition to the curriculum. You will learn such skills as reporting a speech, presenting a radio news broadcast, interviewing and preparing page layouts on screen and producing news and feature stories. You will be allowed four weeks to complete your Bachelor’s Thesis.

Careers

On graduation you can either continue your studies to get a Master’s Degree or go out to work in a large number of fields, particularly in radio and television companies, newspapers, magazines, internet news companies, or freelance journalism.
