MSLU students virtually visited the European Parliament in Brussels

On June 23, Victoria Tuchina, Svetlana Pavlikova, Alberto Mackey, Anton Kupriyanov and Vladislav Zhuravlev, students of the Language Skills Training Program virtually visited the Directorate General of Logistics and Conference Translation of the European Parliament in Brussels.

During the virtual study visit, students had the opportunity to hear firsthand from interpreters of the European Parliament how this large-scale translation service functions, the work is organized to provide translation into 24 languages, simultaneous interpreters are working during the pandemic. All meetings of the European Parliament are being held remotely now.

Experts from the European Parliament shared relevant information on various aspects of their work, talked about the features of translation and interpreting activities in EU institutions.

The second part of the virtual internship gave an insight in accreditation testing to be engaged in working for EU institutions. Over 3,000 accredited full-time and freelance translators work at various events in the European Parliament. In addition to excellent command of their working languages ​​and simultaneous and consecutive interpreting techniques, candidates needed to show stress management skills, ability to work with special terms on a particular topic and detailed knowledge of the European Union and its institutions.
