The Maurice Thorez Institute of Foreign Languages is a legendary brand name, the precursor and an integral part of MSLU. Its rich history and continuous academic tradition have made it an acknowledged center of academic excellence and research in linguistics and language education. The Institute blends fine academic tradition with innovative thinking, and its outstanding professors and lecturers are not only experts in their subjects, but also experienced teachers and tutors.
The name "Maurice Thorez" – after the French politician who was a friend of the Soviet Union – was adopted by the institution in 1964. Later, after 2006, it became associated with just one line of the much diversified university, its traditional core: Linguistics and Language Teaching.
